Technical Assistance Pool

The Technical Assistance Pool is an accumulation of specialists who have skills they would like to share with beginning and transitioning farmers. These individuals have been whole-heartedly endorsed by CRAFT farmers who have used their services. Divided by category, please scroll down to browse the list of consultants. At the bottom of the page individuals are listed that have not yet worked with CRAFT farms but have experience working with direct-market farmers or expressed an interest in offering their services to further sustainable farms in our regions.

Chris Blanchard owns and operates Rock Spring Farm, with fifteen acres of certified organic vegetable, herb, and greenhouse production north of Decorah, Iowa, selling produce year-round through a 200-member CSA, food stores, and a farmers market since 1999. Prior to 1999, Chris managed student farms, worked as an intern, packing house manager, plant breeding assistant, and farm manager, and provided consulting for a major organic processor, in California, Wisconsin, Maine, and Washington state. Under the banner of Flying Rutabaga Works, Chris' workshops about farm business concepts, food safety, organic vegetable production, and scaling up to farmers throughout the country have gained a reputation for fresh approaches, down-to-earth information, and honesty.
Chris has done a number of whole-farm assessments with CRAFT farmers in northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, including Sweet Home Organics, Trogg's Hollow, and Hazzard Free Farm.

Tim has a diversified farm in Elkhorn, WI where he grows fruits and vegetables for a 325-member CSA. At LotFotL Community Farm they also raise steers, hogs, and chickens through a variety of marketing methods. Tim offers to share his experience with mechanical weed management, in methods such as flame weeding, ridge till cultivation, stale bed techniques, multi-row and row-crop cultivation.

Amber specializes in small business consulting for a variety of clients including designers, farmers, and retailers. She works with a number of CRAFT farmers, and has been a featured speaker at the CRAFT Open Meetings for her expertise in QuickBooks setup and management. Her services include QuickBooks setup and custom report design; cleanup of existing QB systems; incremental and ongoing bookkeeping, reports and analysis; and recommendations for improving business efficiencies. She has fifteen years of experience and highly-developed technical, training, and organizational skills in the IT, Marketing, and Customer Relationship Management industries. She is based in Chicago, and travels to accommodate on-site client consultations.

Accountant and Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor
Tumea and Associates CPA Firm and Financial Services

Connie regularly helps clients set up their QuickBooks company files, charts of accounts, etc. and teaches them about bookkeeping and how to use the program. At her firm in Downers Grove, IL, Tumea and Associates, they do accounting and bookkeeping, QuickBooks training and consulting, personal and business tax returns, incorporations, payroll processing, sales tax returns, etc. Some of their clients include beekeepers and farmers, and Connie is happy to visit clients on site.

David Wolf is an attorney and graduate of the AOLC Stateline Farm Beginnings program. He practices corporate and partnership law and has worked with farmers in structuring their businesses. Initial consultations are available for a flat fee of $125.

Over the last 10 years I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of jobs that have required me to fulfill the role of marketer and designer. For designing I typically use Microsoft Publisher but I can also work within Word and other software. I currently am familiar with and utilize all the social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) I can also assist with creating a website, develop displays like a market stand, consult on practicals for on-property marketing possibilities, like signage, etc. Presently, I am in charge of marketing for Anderson Organics which includes newsletters, promotional materials from brochures to bags, market display, social media and farm aesthetics, and a video blog.

Permaculture and Sustainability

For over two decades Nancy Klehm has designed landscape, taught ecological systems and built food systems in collaboration with others. Her approach is one of instigation and activation of already existent communities, and her work demonstrates her commitment to redefining the way human populations coexist with plant and animal systems on this planet. Her work is concentrated in the fields of SOIL (compost systems: mesophilic, thermophilic, and vermicomposting on a household and institutional scale;  cover cropping/plant guilds/perennial vegetables/native edibles; food foresting; erosion prevention earthworks) and WATER (household and building rainwater catchment and greywater to landscape - mulch basins, rain gardens, biofiltration, constructed wetlands, etc.) She is also has experience with native plants, raising chickens and quail (bobwhite and coturnix) and designing roof gardens.
