As we begin 2016, some of our valued staff members and friends have moved on to new ventures. Others remain a part of our team, but have assumed new roles. We’d like our friends and partners to know about these changes at Angelic Organics Learning Center.

Liz Whitehurst (our On-farm Program Director) and Spencer Ellsworth (our Urban Farm Manager in Rockford) moved back to the Washington, DC area to start Owl’s Nest Farm, a cooperative CSA farm. They’re sad to leave the farm community at AOLC, but excited about this new adventure. Check out...

There was a magical feeling on Angelic Organics farm this past Saturday, July 25. The sun glistened on crops and brightly colored buildings as supporters, shareholders, farmers, and new friends gathered for a celebration of local food systems...

About a dozen Upper Midwest CRAFT farmers arrived for a field day at Natural Farm Stand in Richmond, IL, on Sunday, July 12. Natural Farm Stand is owned and operated by Sue and Gary Gauger on the farmland that Gary’s grandfather bought in 1923...

It was the winter of 2002 when Sally Sommers opened her first newsletter from Angelic Organics Learning Center at her home in Villa Park. She was intrigued by the on-farm workshops and thought it might be the perfect location for her annual family reunion. She called Tom Spaulding, executive director and co-founder of the Learning Center. Tom obliged, and the Sommers family headed out to the farm!

The Learning Center is located on Angelic Organics Farm, a third generation farm located in Caledonia, Illinois, that is also home to one of the largest CSA...

Beekeeping Basics: The Bees’ Knees Needs

Beekeeping at LotFotL (Living off the Fat of the Land) Community Farm

Arriving at LotFotL Community Farm on Tuesday, CRAFTers were greeted by some exceedingly healthy and jolly-looking pigs (as well as an impressive heap of winter squash).  However, it was a few hundred thousand head of LotFotL’s other livestock that was the focus of this beekeeping field day.

Beekeeper and farm manager April Yuds (pictured here with LotFotL owner/operator Tim Huth) started off this incredibly informative session with a tour of a Langstroth style hive and an overview of all...

Here at Angelic Organics Learning Center, we love chickens.

So much so that we have staff who have worked in their cities, towns, and villages to overturn the chicken laws so that residents can have feathered friends in their own backyard. (By the way, congratulations Roscoe, IL!)

We love chickens so much that we frequently stop a conversation mid-sentence to gawk at their awkardly hilarious run.

We love chickens and we can't get enough of them.

In light of this chicken-love, we recently decided that enough was enough. It was officially time for "Bring Your Chicken to Work" Day.

It’s mid-year, and our Farm Asset Builder participants are well into their growing season. They have also reached the midpoint of Angelic Organics Learning Center’s Farm Asset Builder Program—a program in its inaugural year. The Farm Asset Builder Program is a matched savings program that provides farmers with the opportunity and motivation to save. At the end of our pilot year, farmers in compliance with program requirements will receive up to $2,400 to contribute to a farm asset thanks to our sponsors and donors.

Our sponsors are helping farmers gain...

I am deeply saddened to report to you that Maizy the cow, the matriarch of the Learning Center's herd of Scottish Highland cattle, passed away this morning at 9 am.

The cause of death is still unknown.  The vet took blood samples on Friday night and we will see if they reveal any information this coming week.  This all happened very suddenly.  Wednesday last week, she seemed normal.  Then, on Thursday, she had difficulty walking and little appetite, so I called the vet.  He discovered she had a prolapsed uterus and...
