Goats

There was a magical feeling on Angelic Organics farm this past Saturday, July 25. The sun glistened on crops and brightly colored buildings as supporters, shareholders, farmers, and new friends gathered for a celebration of local food systems...

    - Presenter Abe Lentner’s daughter Lucy showed off her ribbon-winning ducks.
    - Ryan Detwiler shared his enthusiasm for Coturnix quails (which he and husband Corey Gilson call “kitchen chickens”) while Corey greeted visitors eager...

goat new year, cute farm animals, funny goats

Curious, playful, smart, and stubborn are just a few of the adjectives describing one of the most entertaining animals in a farm. This year, however, goats are getting their moment in the sun as 2015 marks the Year of the Goat (and sheep) in the Chinese Zodiac. Angelic Organics Learning Center is offering several special programs to give the public an opportunity to spend time with these fun animals. Children have the chance to kid around with the goats at two upcoming spring events at Angelic Organics farm. Kidwatch is a full-day event on March 28 that gives children...

When I received a text at 2:41 PM saying Nike was in labor, I was sad that we were going to miss the birth of yet another baby goat! Little did I know that we would do more than witness the miracle of a birth, but assist in a complicated delivery.

Look who arrived with the spring weather!

This time of year, friends who are familiar with Angelic Organics farm might be wondering: What is the farm like during the winter?

As I drove into the farm today, past craggy piles up on either side of the driveway, it was remarkably still. Especially compared to how it feels during the height of the growing season - hands harvesting, machines moving, kids playing - it is quiet on the farm this time of year.

But there is always life on the farm and there is always work to be done. Our dedicated crew keeps the livestock fed and watered....

Tears streamed down her face as she grieved that “Banana”, the baby goat she helped name, would not be little when they would return the following year to goat camp. Never in my wildest parenting dreams did I see this coming. Both of my little girls had fallen in love with farm animals, an attachment almost as strong as the one I feel for them. During the three days, the girls collected chicken eggs, made deviled eggs and corn bread from fresh ingredients, cooperated with other children from Chicagoland and...

Goat with newborn kids on the farm

by Nellie Conover-Crockett, Livestock Assistant, age 13

Although spring doesn't seem to be coming, things are already starting up at Angelic Organics Learning Center. Farmers are planting seeds in the greenhouse, baby chicks have arrived, and most importantly, goats have started to have their babies.

Last fall, in October, 8 goats were bred to have their babies in March and April. There were no babies in the first part of March but late on the night of March 17th, Sugar had her baby. Sugar had one girl, or doeling, who was named Blanquita, or "Little White One" in Spanish. Blanquita...

By Martha Boyd, Program Director, Urban Initiative (Chicago)

On February 16th, over 200 visitors convened at the Garfield Park Conservatory to learn about caring for livestock in the city.
