Youth Leaders Receive Grant Award for New Project: "Full of Life: Cares and Shares"

Congratulations to the Roots & Wings Youth Leaders on their recent grant from the In Youth We Trust grant program of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois.

The Roots & Wings Youth Leaders, part of the Learning Center's Urban Initiative in Rockford, are a group of teens who work together to plan, plant, tend, harvest, cook, and sell vegetables from urban gardens in Rockford. Youth Leaders are role models for younger gardeners in our Urban Initiative, and often speak at public events in Rockford.

In Youth We Trust is a youth philanthropy program of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. The program teaches grantmaking and leadership skills to today’s youth, preparing them to be the positive change of tomorrow. In Youth We Trust awards are given to youth-led projects, in which youth brainstorm a project that will positively impact their community, write and submit a proposal, and take part in a review process that includes an interview with the foundation.

The Roots & Wings Youth Leaders received a $2,000 award for their project, "Full of Life: Cares and Shares," in which they plan to work with senior citizens in southwest Rockford. The Youth Leaders will deliver fresh vegetables to seniors every week, building relationships and sharing and collecting recipes. The project will be conducted with collaboration with the Booker T. Washington Community Center, Comprehensive Community Solutions, Eco-Advocates, and Tinker Swiss Cottage and Museum.

Special congratulations to Kolten Luvert, Malokot Baker, and Deborah St. Fleurose, the Youth Leaders who came up with the idea for this exciting project.
